Public Health Insight Community Stars aims to highlight the diversity of individuals working to create change for lasting positive impacts in our communities, through the application of public health and global health practice.
WHAT DOES PUBLIC HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
Public health to me means using knowledge and tools to understand, identify and address factors that impact the health and wellbeing of people and communities. Aside from health promotion and disease prevention, equity and social justice are also at the core of a public health practice.
WHAT WORK DO YOU DO IN PUBLIC HEALTH?
I’ve spent most of my career so far working in cancer care in Ontario. I initially worked at the provincial level, supporting the development of health policies for Ontario’s organized breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening programs. Currently, I am working as a Quality Consultant at the Regional Cancer Program in Mississauga. We are responsible for looking after the quality of cancer care for the entire region and responding to local cancer issues. A lot of the work we have done recently is mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on cancer care now and for the future.
YOUR PUBLIC HEALTH MESSAGE?
The core values of public health do not only apply to designing policies and programs. I believe these values are also important in guiding our day-to-day interactions and in helping to shape a better workplace. As we continue to advocate for an inclusive, diverse and respectful society, I strongly encourage public health practitioners to call out instances of inequity and injustice in your communities and workplaces, especially if you are in a position of privilege.
