“Women are not dying because of untreatable diseases. They are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving: We have not yet valued women’s lives and health highly enough.”

United Nations Foundation – It Begins with One: Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights (2014)

What does global health mean to you?

Global health means thinking of social, economic, environmental disparities as detrimental factors that impact communities and transcend national borders. It means the promotion of interdisciplinary approaches that consider intersectional characteristics of specific populations and demographics.

Global health means prioritizing lack of access to basic health and education to alleviate not only the physical health of communities but also promote development, economic growth and empower the most vulnerable.

What work do you do in global health?

I have worked on an inclusive and appropriate response to the COVID-19 crisis in Venezuelan refugees in Colombia ensuring continuity of primary care services. SRH and maternal health remain my passion so I have worked in Nigeria and South Africa in community-based projects promoting basic access and education.

My work focuses on ensuring sustainability by supporting policies and partnerships that are critical to empowering populations. Lastly, my current position with the Federal Government has allowed me to work closely with key partners in the health ecosystem to expand our great technological advances and intellectual property for worldwide equitable access to medical solutions.

What is your global health message?

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven the importance of global health, but it has also set the SRH and maternal health agenda back rapidly and dramatically. Primary care delivery capacity has been threatened since last year. Therefore, our commitment to furthering SRH and to close the existing gaps in the current landscape is fundamental.
