Why Diversity Matters | Katherine Phillips – Talks at Columbia

What does public health mean to you?

To me, public health means looking holistically and taking an upstream approach to address the underlying social determinants that impact the health of our communities.

It’s important to work with communities to understand their needs and empower them, ultimately aiming to eliminate health inequities.

Public health is a team sport which means we need to work in interdisciplinary teams to address underlying systemic issues and improve the health and well-being of our communities.

What work do you do in public health?

Currently, I work as a Health Promoter on the Health Equity and Reconciliation Team with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. My work focuses primarily on ensuring the workplace is a diverse and inclusive environment for all employees.

I also support my team with community initiatives focused on reaching underserved communities experiencing health disparities to ensure they have equitable access to services and opportunities.

With the current pandemic, I am also partially redeployed to support the COVID team with case and contact management, working primarily to support contact tracing and COVID hotlines.

What is your public health message?

With the current pandemic, public health has really come into the spotlight. People are beginning to understand what public health is and the importance of public health in our every day lives.

I’m hoping this increase in the community’s understanding of the field of public health will increase the awareness and breadth of our work.

We need to remember that a big component of successful public health initiatives is the collaboration between community members, policy makers, health care professionals and a variety of other parties.

We all need to work together as a team and collaborate to ensure community voices are represented!
