Social Determinants of Health: Claire Pomeroy at TEDxUCDavis

What does public health mean to you?

Public health is the practice of alleviating social risk factors and promoting social protective factors in communities to overcome systemic barriers that impede the ability to actualize health potential and health equity.

What work do you do in public health?

Operating in the United States of America, I research, analyze, and advocate for methods that address the social determinants of health and health-related social needs.

I mainly focus on how to leverage Medicaid and other policies to improve the health of low-income and underserved communities and ameliorate health disparities.

What is your global health message?

To ensure the health of the nation and the world, as a collective, we must work closely together in innovative ways to explicitly address the social determinants of health.

To protect and promote our nation’s health, we must strengthen our public health infrastructure through adequate funding and the proper allocation of resources.
